Application Guide

Before you begin:

✅Weather conditions as recommended when laying new asphalt pavement

✅Existing asphalt pavement is dry and swept or blown clean of loose debris (broom, leaf blower, etc.)

✅Temperature is above 50°F (10°C)

✅PPE is available (gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility gear, close-toed shoes)

✅BioTak is shaken or mixed thoroughly before application

  • 15 minutes for 275-gallon totes
  • 7-8 minutes for 55-gallon drums
  • 1-2 minutes for 5-gallon pails and 1-gallon jugs
  • 30 seconds for 1-quart bottles

✅Application rate is set at 1 gallon per 180 sq ft

✅Supporting Products: BST Cleaner and MG Degreaser (with clean water)

✅Traffic control plan in place (cones, flaggers, signage as needed) and caution is practiced around vehicles and pedestrians

Method 1: Backpack or Handpump Sprayer

What You Need:

  • A clean backpack or handpump sprayer with a fan-tip or cone-tip nozzle
  • BioTak product, measured volume appropriate for the project

Steps:

  1. Site Prep: Sweep or blow off all loose debris. Blot the surface using a towel to make sure the surface is dry.
  2. Pavement Temperature: Use a temperature gun to gauge the surface and make sure it is above 50°F
  3. Fill sprayer: Mix BioTak thoroughly in the product container. Pour the mixed BioTak into the backpack or handpump sprayer tank. Prime the spray applicator as recommended by the manufacturer.
  4. Spray Application: Walk at a steady pace, spraying side to side to provide a smooth consistent layer for binding. For potholes, spray BioTak to all contact surfaces, including the sides.
  5. Wait 15 minutes for BioTak to spread evenly before placing and compacting new asphalt overlay mixes.
  6. Allow new asphalt overlays to cure for traffic as designed.
  7. Return any unused BioTak product back to the manufacturer's container and seal tightly.

💡 Use backpack or pump sprayer for small applications like potholes, edges, shoulders, and leveling surfaces. BioSpan's vehicle-mounted Spray System also includes a spray wand and hose to reach small application areas.

Method 2: Spray System (Flatbed Truck or Compact Unit)

What You Need:

  • A clean BioSpan Spray System (flatbed or compact units), calibrated appropriately
  • BioTak product in 275-gallon totes (for the flatbed system) or 80-100 gallons (for the compact system)

Steps:

  1. Site Prep: Sweep or blow off all loose debris. Blot the surface using a towel to make sure the surface is dry.
  2. Pavement Temperature: Use a temperature gun to gauge the surface and make sure it is above 50°F
  3. Prepare the spray system: Ensure pump, hoses, and spray bars are clean and functioning. Make sure fittings and clamps are tight and sealed. Ensure that all appropriate valves are open/closed before running the system.
  4. Mix BioTak thoroughly (for 15 minutes within the tote) before use.
  5. Calibrate flow rate: Target rate is 1 gal per 180 sq ft (0.05 gallons per sq yd). Adjust vehicle speed and pressure accordingly. May slowly close the product return / recirculation valve to adjust pressure.
  6. Application: Switch on the appropriate spray booms from the cab control system. Once the vehicle is in motion, switch on the Master control to start spraying.
  7. Avoid stopping mid-pass to prevent over-application.
  8. Post-Application: Once the spray line has been switched off and the vehicle is parked, close off the valve to the BioTak product container and make sure the top is sealed tightly for storage.
  9. Place and compact new asphalt mixes and allow to cure as designed.

💡 Use a cone truck or follow vehicle with arrow board for safety on roads or in lots.

Cleanup & Aftercare

  • Flush all spray equipment clean of BioTak residue.
  • Flush BST Cleaner through the spray system to clear nozzles, hoses, pumps, and tanks.
  • After BST, flush the spray equipment using a more concentrated MG Degreaser solution by diluting with less water (within the recommended range).
  • Clean tools and equipment immediately after use. May use BST Cleaner or diluted MG Degreaser for exterior sprayer surface cleaning
