The RePlay Comparison Calculator is designed to compare the financial and environmental impacts of using RePlay with traditional pavement preservation methods. The results are based on reliable data from industry standards, studies, and lifecycle analyses.

1. Pavement Condition Index (PCI)

Definition: The PCI is a numerical rating of pavement condition, ranging from 100 (excellent) to 10 (failed). It quantifies the level of distress on a pavement surface.

Source: Calculations reference ASTM D6433, the standard test method for determining PCI. This is an internationally recognized standard, though the specific test itself must be purchased.

2. Preservation Curve Data

The cost savings are calculated based on pavement preservation curves that illustrate the impact of treatments like RePlay on extending pavement lifecycle.

Sources: RoadResource.org and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) provide insights into preservation effectiveness and lifecycle costs (RoadResource.org, FHWA publication).

3. Traditional Preservation Methods

Cost and Emission Estimates: The calculator includes data on traditional methods such as chip seals, fog seals, seal coats, emulsions, micro surfacing, and overlays. The costs and carbon emissions per square yard were derived from industry reports, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), and Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs).

Application Frequency: Frequencies for traditional methods are based on average industry practices.

4. RePlay Application

Application Rate: The recommended rate is 0.015 gallons per square yard, with reapplications every 3–7 years (default: 5 years).

Cost Data: The cost per square yard for RePlay is set based on distributor to direct-from-BioSpan pricing.

5. Lifecycle Cost Analysis

Calculation: For both traditional methods and RePlay, the total cost over the expected lifecycle is calculated by summing application costs over the lifecycle period.

6. Carbon Emissions Comparison

Traditional Methods: Emission data (in pounds of CO₂ per square yard per year) for each method was collected from studies by the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) and other sources.

RePlay: Emissions data for RePlay was sourced from the 2009 Life Cycle BEES Analysis, which determined the product’s lifecycle emissions.

7. Data Sources

Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council (MSRPC) and AURI provided additional research on biobased pavement preservation.

BEES Analysis (2009) for lifecycle carbon emissions of RePlay.

Industry standards and real-world data informed cost and emissions for traditional methods.

By aggregating this data, the calculator offers a transparent, evidence-based comparison of costs and environmental benefits, helping decision makers be even more informed about pavement preservation. Work with your BioSpan authorized expert to ensure you get the most out of your pavement preservation program.
