Application Guide

Before you begin:

✅Weather is dry (no rain forecast for the next 2 hours)

✅Existing surface is dry and swept or blown clean of loose debris (broom, leaf blower, etc.)

✅Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) millings are dry and screened as needed. Recommend removing dirt and uncoated stone

✅Surface and ambient temperature is above 50°F (10°C)

✅PPE is available (gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility gear, close-toed shoes)

✅Activate product, undiluted, in volumes appropriate for the project. Activate application range is between 3/4 gallons to 1-1/4 gallons per 2000 pounds of RAP

✅Activate is shaken or mixed thoroughly before application

  • 15 minutes for 275-gallon totes
  • 7-8 minutes for 55-gallon drums
  • 1-2 minutes for 5-gallon pails and 1-gallon jugs
  • 30 seconds for 1-quart bottles

✅Supporting Products: BR-3600, Activate Cleaner, BioTak-4600, RePlay

✅Traffic control plan in place (cones, flaggers, signage as needed) and caution is practiced around vehicles and pedestrians

Method 1: Small Batch Mixing

What You Need:

  • A clean mechanical mixing barrel (e.g. cement mixer) or heavy-duty container (e.g. skid steer bucket, wheelbarrow)
  • Shovel or similar tool for churning by hand, wheelbarrow or vehicle to transfer to site
  • Activate product, undiluted
  • Measuring tools, such as a marked gallon container
  • Compaction tool, such as tamper or vibratory plate

Steps:

  1. Site Prep: Sweep or blow off all loose debris. Blot the existing surface using a towel to make sure the surface is dry.
  2. Pavement Temperature: Use a temperature gun to gauge the surface and make sure it is above 50°F
  3. Equipment Prep: It is recommended to spray a single coat of BR-3600, undiluted, to the mixing container prior to adding RAP and Activate for easier cleanup
  4. Load the measured volume of RAP into the mixing barrel, scoop, or container
  5. Measure and pour the required amount of Activate based on target dosage (gallons per ton of RAP). May also spray Activate to the RAP millings when measured appropriately.
  6. If using a barrel mixer: Run the mixer for 3–5 minutes, or until the RAP is fully coated and loosened.
  7. If mixing by hand: Use a shovel or similar tool to churn the RAP and Activate thoroughly inside the container or scoop. Continue mixing until evenly coated.
  8. Inspect blend for even distribution; eliminate dry sections or break down larger clumps.
  9. Allow mixture to sit for 15-20 minutes for Activate to spread further and begin rejuvenation.
  10. Transfer Activate RAP mixture to the project site. It is recommended to apply BioTak-4600 to existing asphalt surfaces prior to placing Activate RAP for better bonding.
  11. Compact in place using a vibratory plate, hand tamper, or vehicle driving over (depending upon Activate RAP patch size and shape)

Method 2: Large Batch Mixing

What You Need:

  • A clean mechanical mixer, such as a pugmill or other continuous mixing equipment
  • Activate product, undiluted
  • Measuring method, such as flow rate controls (for spray application) or measured containers
  • Hauling equipment to transfer mix to the site
  • Compaction tools, such as vibratory rollers

Steps:

  1. Site Prep: Sweep or blow off all loose debris on existing asphalt. Blot the surface using a towel to make sure the surface is dry.
  2. Pavement Temperature: Use a temperature gun to gauge the surface and make sure it is above 50°F
  3. Equipment Prep: It is recommended to spray a single coat of BR-3600, undiluted, to mixers, hauling equipment and loaders prior to adding RAP and Activate for easier cleanup.
  4. Load the measured volume of RAP into the pugmill or other mechanical mixer.
  5. Measure and pour the required amount of Activate based on target dosage (gallons per ton of RAP). May also spray Activate to the RAP millings on a feeding belt when measured appropriately or auto adjusted using belt scales.
  6.  Inspect the blend for even distribution and make sure the RAP is fully coated with Activate. Eliminate dry sections or break down larger clumps if present.
  7. Allow mixture to sit for 15-20 minutes for Activate to spread further and begin rejuvenation.
  8. Transfer Activate RAP mixture to the project site. It is recommended to apply BioTak-4600 to existing asphalt surfaces prior to placing Activate RAP for better bonding.
  9. Compact in place using a steel vibratory roller.

Cleanup & Aftercare

  • Wait 3 hours for Activate to completely cure once compacted
  • For improved bonding and rejuvenation, it is recommended to treat the compacted Activate RAP surface with RePlay
  • Clean all tools and equipment immediately after use to prevent buildup or clogging.
  • For Easy Release: Coat mixing barrels, scoops, and loader buckets with BR-3600 before loading and mixing to reduce adhesion.
  • For Equipment Cleanup: Use Activate Cleaner (undiluted) to flush or wipe down equipment that has contacted Activate.
  • Store remaining Activate in a sealed container, out of direct sunlight and away from freezing temperatures.
  • Store any remaining BioTak, BR-3600, RePlay, and Activate Cleaner in their original containers.
